Als Phasenlehre und wegen ihrer mangelnden empirischen Absicherung nicht unumstritten, kommt Freuds Theorie der psychosexuellen Entwicklung auch außerhalb ihres psychoanalytischen Kontextes eine große Bedeutung zu, da sie das Menschenbild der Humanwissenschaften und der (abendländischen) Gesellschaft revolutioniert hat.
